Wave’s opponent 0-1

without comments

Tupelo’s season-opening opponent Friday – Covington, Tenn. – opened its season last week, losing 27-15 to Memphis Ridgeway. The Golden Wave defeated the Chargers 42-7 last season on the road. In that game, QB Chris Garrett threw 3 TD passes to Chad Bumphis.

Remember, high school games are kicking off at 7:30 p.m. during the early weeks of the season for heat reasons.

Tupelo scrimmage

with one comment

Cleaning out the notebook from Thursday’s Tupelo-West Point scrimmage:

- QB Chris Garrett completed 4 of 7 passes for 110 yards and three TDs. WR Garrian Heard caught two of the TDs for 30 and 37 yards. The 37-yarder gave the Golden Wave the lead. “Garrian’s worked really hard. It’s his time to shine,” Garrett said.

- Wide receivers coach Darryl Carter filled in for first-year offensive coordinator Andy Crotwell in the scrimmage. Crotwell was with his wife at the hospital where they were expecting the birth of a child. “I thought Coach Carter did a magnificant job calling plays tonight,” THS head coach Eric Collins noted.

- Heard and WR Chad Bumphis, who caught a 41-yard TD pass from Garrett, were called for “showboating” after they scored. Heard struck his chest after his first TD grab while Bumphis slowed down to a trot the final few yards to the end zone. Don’t expect see that happening again, both players said.

“I guess you can’t slow down. I’ll run fast all the way now,” Bumphis said. “You can’t draw attention to yourself.”

“I’ll stop it now that I know,” Heard added.

- Garrett was a little disappointed in the offense’s struggle to sustain a drive. Two of his TD passes came on the first play. The other came on a 3-and-12. “You’re not going to be able to strike quick against South Panola. We’ve got to work on driving the ball,” Garrett said.

- Garrett is competing with Jordan Darling for the extra point duties. The QB kicked two of the team’s PATs in the scrimmage. Darling booted one. Bryshaad Jefferies, a straight-on kicker, handles the kick off chores.
